The Marin Lady Ballaz and the First Base Foundation put on a FREE basketball Clinic for middle school girls at the Davidson School Gym in San Rafael on Thursday, February 23rd. The Clinic was a huge success with 22 girls attending and learning skills from Caren Horstmeyer. Caren graciously donated her talent, expertise and time and we are thankful to her for sharing her vast knowledge. Caren is a former Pac-10 Coach of the Year and was the head women’s basketball coach at UC Berkeley and Santa Clara for 17 years cumulatively. Currently Caren runs basketball camps Horstmeyerhoops in Marin where she lives with her family.

We were so impressed with the enthusiasm of the participants. They worked and played hard. Everyone was highly motivated, focused and enthusiastic. Caren focused on the fundamentals of the game teaching drills highlighting for lays ups, foot work, post play, passing, jab steps, jump stops, pivoting, blocking out, and running the court. 4 members of the The Marin Lady Ballaz 8th grade team volunteered and assisted Caren in running plays and games during the day. They were so helpful and encouraging to the other girls teaching some of the tricks of dribbling especially how to use your fingertips and not your palms. They were especially adept at pushing the ball hard and keeping their hands low.

Thank you everyone for your participation and we can’t wait to put on another event like this is the future.
