The California Warriors Gold team just finished participating in the 2013 Bob Garretson Sr. Tournament in Yakima, Washington.  We want to congratulate the Gold team for playing so well.

The tournament was 19U and featured 9 total teams from Washington, Oregon & California. The Gold team competed to a 1-5 overall record losing two games by only one run.    The Warriors faced good competition with a higher experience level and this  did not keep the Warriors from showcasing their talents.

The Warriors started off slow in the Bob Garretson Memorial Baseball Tournament as they failed to get a run across the plate against Bellingham. Mason Collins competed and pitched well enough to keep the team in the ballgame, however the Warriors struggled to get the bats going at the plate losing 4-0.

After a night’s rest, the Warriors were up early to take on the Skagit Sox. The Sox sent their ace to the mound. The Warriors countered by sending Colby Morris to the hill with a solid lineup to back him up.  The Warriors fought hard and scored 5 runs in the 6th. Jordon Solomon had a huge day going 2-3 with 2 RBI to lead the offensive attack. Corey Echols and Mason Collins were also in the mix, providing some keys at bats. The Warriors ended up falling 6-5 to the Sox who ended up faring well in the tournament.

Later that night, the Warriors ran into the host team; the Yakima Beetles. The Beetles roster was stacked with college level talent but the Warriors were ready to battle under the lights. Jack Elias took the hill for the Warriors and battled through 5 innings of quality work. The Beetles had some timely hits and executed when needed to grab the win 6-5.

Following a long day’s rest, the Warriors were back at it under the lights against the Beetles; this time they were determined knock off the home town favorites. Gabe Bouchard started and battled his way through 2 innings of work surrendering 6 runs before leaving the game due to injury. Never giving up, the Warriors fought hard and scored runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, tying the game at 6-6. Jordon Solomon lead the way once again going 3-3 including an RBI double and a go-ahead 2-run triple to deep right field, and Kiefer Dickson had a great game, going 2 for 3. A couple key subsitituions were also made for the Warriors – Patrick Shore came in late and provided a pinch hit RBI single. Taylor Kyle came in after Bouchard and supplied the team with 4 & 2/3 innings of no-run baseball before handing the ball to Brett Bowyer who slammed the door shut to earn his first save the season. The Warriors won the contest 7-6 with a thrilling diving catch by Solomon to save the game.

Mason Collins went out for his second start of the tournament for the final game against the Skagit American. The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead before letting the game slip away in the 4th inning when Skagit scored all of their 6 runs. Timely hits and a couple errors gave the win away. Collins pitched well once again, proving that he can pitch at this level on an every day basis.

Overall, the trip and tournament was a big success. The trip helped the team build chemistry, and many of the players enjoyed the experience of playing teams at a higher level. Looking forward to attending next year!
