Reno Tournament
Last weekend, the California Warriors White Team traveled to Reno, Nevada to compete in the Reno Muckdogs Pre- 4th of July Invitational. With temperatures reaching over 100 degrees  every day, games were tough but the Warriors were able to persevere and play through the heat  Written by Head Coach Ryan Burke

Game 1:  The Warriors quickly fell behind 3-0 to the Shasta County Sundevils in the top of the first inning, but a Riley Moore 2rbi single brought them back within one run in the bottom half of the inning. Starting pitcher Owen Hamilton was able to settle down after the first to spin a complete game gem only giving up one more run in the remaining 6 innings. The Warriors got the rest of the offense they needed from a Sam Schmidt 4th inning grand slam that saw the Warriors take the lead for good 6-3. From there, Hamilton did the rest of the work and the Warriors opened the tournament with a win 6-4. Keith Whitaker added 2 hits in the win and Jake Rubey contributed another.

Game 2:  The Warriors again fell behind early against the opposing team Oaks Baseball Club trailing 3-1 in the second inning, but as in the first game the Warriors were able to battle back behind timely hitting and good pitching. Starting pitcher Alex Bires threw another complete game for the Warriors, while only giving up two earned runs in the process. Owen Hamilton contributed 3 hits for the Warriors, with Jake Schmidt adding another two, and Jake Rubey adding a couple hits of his own. In the end the Warriors battled back and won 7-5.

Game 3: This game started out as nothing new to the Warriors as they trailed 2-0 to the Danville Bulls after the first inning and 6-1 after the third. As they had done in previous games, the Warriors battled back scoring runs in innings 3-6 to take an eventual 7-6 lead in the 6th. However, trying to win from behind again finally took a toll on the Warriors as they gave up their lead and lost the game 11-7. Starting pitcher Daniel Ongaro gave the Warriors quality innings and gave way to Sean Henry and Keith Whitaker who finished the game on the mound. Offensively, Sam Lyons, added a 2rbi double, Weston Terrell reached base safely every at bat gathering one hit and two walks, and Jacob Berg added a double and a single as well as a stolen base.

Game 4:  Game 4 once again saw the Warriors start from behind as they gave up the lead instantly in the first inning to the host team, Reno Muckdogs, and by the 5th inning trailed 13-3. However, as they had showed previously, the Warriors would not be held down as they clawed their way back to score 5 runs in the top of the 5th to bring the game to 13-8. Unfortunately, the game was called due to time limit but the coaches were proud with how the team responded after being down by so many runs. Weston Terrell, Matthew Brockley and Jake Rubey all pitched for the Warriors in the loss. Offensively, Daniel Ongaro, Sean Henry and Sam Lyons all added rbi singles.

Game 5:  In the final game of the Reno Tournament, things took a turn when the Warriors raced out in front to a 4-0 in the top of the first inning over Sutter Baseball Club. In the inning, Dane Goodman added a 2rbi single, and Will Dalporto and Matthew Brockley added rbi doubles. Game 5 turned out to be another offensive battle like the Warriors had seen previously as the high scoring game saw both teams take multiple leads during the game. Ryan Copeland started on the mound for the Warriors, and gave way to Daniel Ongaro after 4 strong innings. It was tough to keep the much older Sutter Baseball Club down, but both pitchers were effective. Unfortunately, unlike the Warriors had done to teams previously, Sutter Baseball Club was able to capture an eventual 11-9 win. Every Warrior on the roster was able to see playing time in the last game with many contributing. Weston Terrell contributed 3 hits and Owen Hamilton added two of his own.

The coaches are pleased with the team’s effort as they saw noticeable improvement in each player’s game, and also saw the team’s chemistry fully come together. At the halfway point in their season Warriors White now sits with a 11-8-1 record.

The following is a paragraph written by White Team Catcher Jake Schmidt who had a great weekend both offensively and defensively, and also added the White Team’s only home-run of the season.

“This weekend was so fun. Even though we lost to older teams, we learned a lot from the experience. We got to face better pitchers and better hitters. I also got to learn more about my coaches and fellow team-mates. I shared many laughs with everybody on the team and can’t wait for more baseball on the Warriors.”

The following write-up was written by White Team infielder Jake Rubey who had a solid weekend offensively and defensively.

Day 1  The California Warriors white team traveled up to Reno from June 25-28. The warriors first game at golden eagle complex, Owen Hamilton was on the mound. The warriors fell behind early but the battled back. They were down by two and them Jake Schmidt comes up with the bases loaded, the pitcher serves Schmidt up a meatball and then it was gone! The warriors won the first game. The warriors have a second game that day, Alex Bires was on the mound. The warriors jump out to an early lead and don’t give it up. Bires throws the second complete game of the tournament.

Day 2  Daniel Ongaro takes the mound in the third game of the tournament. The Warriors fall behind early but battle back and take the lead in the top the sixth. The Danville bulls get their lead-off hitter on and start playing small ball and eventually take the lead. Sadly the game runs out of time and the Warriors suffer their first loss of the tournament.
Day 3  The Warriors are playing the host team and Weston Terrell takes the mound. The warriors fall behind early and never mange to catch up, but in the bottom off the fifth the game gets called because of the two hour rule limit per game.  The Warriors are now 2-2 in the tournament.
Day 4  The last day of the tournament Ryan Copeland takes the mound and the Warriors jump out to an early 4-0 lead, but Sutter baseball club battled back and beat the Warriors. Overall the California Warriors white team went 2-3 in the tournament.

The record does not show how well the Warriors played. They battled every game and the Warriors bonded and got better on every level. It was a great tournament and a lot of fun on and off the field. Great job California Warriors!
